Why are companies included in the “do test” category?

The companies included in the “do test” category manufacture products that are tested on animals. Those marked with an asterisk (*) are currently observing a moratorium on (suspension of) animal testing. Please encourage them to announce a permanent ban. Listed in parentheses are examples of products manufactured by each company or, if applicable, its parent company.

Companies on this list may manufacture individual lines of products without animal testing (e.g., Clairol claims that its Herbal Essences line is not tested on animals), but they have not eliminated animal testing on their entire line of cosmetics and household products.

Companies on this list may make some products—such as pharmaceuticals—that are required by law to be tested on animals. However, the inclusion of these companies on this list is because of the animal testing that they conduct on their personal care and household products—tests that are not required by law—rather than the required animal testing that they conduct.
