Intern at PETA: Community Animal Project

Community Animal Project (CAP) rescues and improves the lives of animals in the Hampton Roads area and operates PETA’s mobile SNIP (Spay and Neuter Immediately, Please!) van, which provides spay-and-neuter services to those who would not normally be able to afford them or have access to them.

Primary Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Assist with maintaining and updating CAP files
  • Assist CAP fieldworkers in delivering food and supplies, including sturdy doghouses and straw bedding, to needy animals
  • Assist CAP’s coordinator in responding to correspondence and telephone inquiries
  • Guide and educate callers about being real companions to their animals, emphasizing the benefits of spaying and neutering their animals
  • Help care for CAP quarantine animals by exercising, socializing, feeding, and cleaning up after them
  • Help with processing CAP check requests and credit card reports
  • Travel to North Carolina to assist CAP staff in rescuing and improving the lives of sick, abused, neglected, scared, and aggressive animals

Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of companion animal issues
  • Patience when dealing with potentially volatile and reluctant CAP clients
  • Valid driver’s license and clean driving record preferred
  • Strong verbal communication skills
  • Animal-handling skills preferred
  • Work or volunteer experience in an open-admission shelter or humane association preferred
