For her cookbook Quick-Fix Vegetarian, which contains dozens of recipes for the growing number of busy Americans who are demanding healthy and humane meatless dishes, Woodstock resident Robin Robertson has won the Best New Cookbook category in PETA's 5th Annual Proggy Awards. Robertson will receive a framed certificate and will be featured on PETA's award-winning Web site PETA.org. PETA's Proggy Awards ("Proggy" is for "progress") recognize animal-friendly achievements in commerce and culture.
Robertson--who has 25 years of experience in the food industry--has written many best-selling vegetarian and vegan cookbooks, including the acclaimed Vegan Planet, Fresh From the Vegetarian Slow Cooker, and The Vegetarian Meat and Potatoes Cookbook, which she wrote to help meat-eaters make the transition to a diet that's good for their hearts and kind to animals. Now, with Quick-Fix Vegetarian, Robertson speeds up the preparation process without leaving out an ounce of flavor or a dash of nutrition. PETA's favorites include the spinach and sun-dried tomato quesadillas, oyster-mushroom po' boys, five-minute slow cooker chili, and no-bake oatmeal-almond cookies. Robertson recently cofounded Vegan Heritage Press--its first publication will be her latest work, Vegan Fire & Spice, which was released on January 2.
"Every mouthwatering recipe in Quick-Fix Vegetarian is a tribute to healthy, humane, and delicious eating," says PETA Vice President Bruce Friedrich. "This remarkable cookbook makes it a snap for veteran vegans and beginners alike to enjoy gourmet meatless cuisine in less time than it takes to order a pizza."
This year, there were 20 Proggy winners, including producers and marketers of vegan foods, shoes, and cruelty-free personal-care products; wildlife-friendly innovators; an author; and a religious leader.
