Norfolk, Va. - With more and more people choosing vegetarian food to improve their health and prevent animal suffering, Major League Baseball teams are stepping up to the plate by offering delicious meat-free options. But nobody has kept pace with Citizens Bank Park, home of the Phillies, which has been named the most vegetarian-friendly ballpark in North America in PETA's annual rankings of the top 10 vegetarian-friendly ballparks.
Citizens Bank Park's Philly mock-steak sandwich--just introduced this season--was enough for the Phillies to knock the 2005 and 2006 defending champion, the San Francisco Giants' AT&T Park, out of the box and into second place. The Phillies faithful also have their choice of veggie dogs and burgers as well as meat-free subs and wraps. Giants fans can still enjoy the same delicious Gardenburgers, portobello sandwiches, veggie sushi, kebabs, corn on the cob, and vegetable fried rice that led the team to back-to-back victories.
"The trend toward healthy and humane meatless options at ballparks is in full swing," says PETA Assistant Director Dan Shannon. "It's a victory for both animals and the health of baseball fans, who will be less likely to keel over from a meat-induced heart attack as the races heat up in the final stretch."
For the first time ever, PETA has also released a list of the top 10 vegetarian-friendly minor league ballparks, with the Durham Bulls Athletic Park staking out first place, and PGE Park, home of the Portland Beavers, clinching second.
Rounding out the top five finishers are the Seattle Mariners' Safeco Field, the San Diego Padres' Petco Park, and the St. Louis Cardinals' Busch Stadium in the majors and the Norfolk Tides' Harbor Park, the Pawtucket Red Sox's McCoy Stadium, and the Memphis Redbirds' AutoZone Park in the minors.
