Cruelty-Free Coats to Warm Your Body and Soul
When the mercury drops, you want to drop, too—right back into bed to hibernate under your down-free comforter, or perhaps you'd rather cozy up in front of a roaring fire with a steaming bowl of Cream of Wheat and some hot vegan cocoa.
Brave the sleet, slush, wind chill, and biting frost? Not without bundling up in a reliable, insulating, all-weather-proof jacket. You could buy a coat made of leather, feathers, fur, or fleece, but what would be more icy-cold than stealing an animal's skin or fur?
With so many high-performance cruelty-free synthetic fillers that persist in all weather conditions, it's easier than ever to look and feel hot when outside it's anything but.
Instead of ...
Instead of heavy, bulky wool—or pashmina, angora, cashmere, shearling, camel hair, and mohair, which are all made from animals—look for snuggly warm synthetic fabrics, such as polyester fleece, acrylic, and cotton flannel. They wash easily, keep their bright colors, cost less, and don't contribute to cruelty.
Check out revolutionary fabrics, such as Gore-Tex, Thermolite, Thinsulate, and Polartec Wind Pro, which has four times the wind resistance of wool.
Down-free coats can be found virtually anywhere, including Eddie Bauer, the Company Store, and Bed Bath & Beyond. Read labels and look for "synthetic down," "down alternative," "polyester fill," or a high-tech fabric—such as Primaloft, a soft, washable, down-like fiber that, unlike down, stays warm even when wet.
Forget about coats with fur collars and trim and fur accessories. Many designers and manufacturers specialize in fabulous faux furs, too, including Charly Calder, Faux, Purrfect Fur, and Sweet Herb.
