Dear Friends,
In a huge victory for animals, with far-ranging consequences, I am thrilled to tell you that after months of discussions and tactics ranging from testifying before Congress to a PETA staffer in a bunny suit trailing Al Gore throughout the country to criticism from Paul McCartney, Bill Maher and Alec Baldwin, as well as a television commercial starring Bea Arthur, PETA has reached an agreement with the White House that will save the lives of as many as 800,000 animals!
The Environmental Protection Agencys (EPAs) high production volume (HPV) chemical-testing program, which calls for tests on 2,800 chemicals, had been fast-tracked by the vice president. Now, however, the government has taken groundbreaking steps toward replacing animal tests with non-animal methods. The Department of Health and Human Services has committed $4.5 million dollars, and the EPA $500,000, to develop more non-animal test methods over the next two years.
Of course, PETA still believes that the HPV chemical program is fundamentally flawed and unscientific, and we will be closely monitoring the chemical companies for compliance with the new guidelines. Now, we need your help with two more animal-testing programs: the endocrine-disruptor testing program and the childrens health chemical-testing program.
Visit PETAs Web site at www.peta-online.org or call us for more information on these deadly tests and how you can help.
As always, thank you so much for caring.
