Actions and Updates You Did It! Purrs and Grrrs

It’s Saturday morning. The kids are watching cartoons, and the coffee’s brewing. With all the shopping and chauffeuring ahead, when will you find time to help animals? How about now?

PETA’s new “Weekend Warrior” cards—with one of 52 step–by–step projects (one for every weekend of the year)—offer inspiring ways for real (busy) people to improve animals’ lives today.

Treat Your Office to a Vegan Meal

Ken Penn treated his coworkers to a delicious vegan lunch to show them that veganism tastes as good as it is healthy and humane to animals.

Host a Video Viewing
Mike Carey turned his living room into an “animal rights cinema” one Sunday afternoon. He treated family and friends to “Riblets” on the grill and then everyone trooped inside to watch PETAí’s eye–opening “Animals Aren’t Ours…” set of four DVDs (available from our catalog or PETAMall.com). PETA offers dozens of videos and DVDs, many of which can be viewed at PETATV.com.

Sticker Your Bumper

Actor Jamie Lee Curtis decorated her car with PETAís ìProud Parent of a Student Who Wonít Dissectî bumper sticker for Octoberís ìCut Out Dissectionî Month in honor of her daughter, Annieís, refusal to dissect. Proud of your vegetarian son or daughter? Show it with a ìproud parentî bumper sticker from PETAís catalog.

Cut Out Dissection

With help from other compassionate students, Danielle Marino successfully campaigned to have her University adopt a dissection student–choice policy (dissectionchoice.org) to provide students who don’t want to cut up animals with computer or video–based alternatives. Even if you’re not a student, you can offer to help your local universities that are still using animals in physiology classes to switch to non-animal testing methods.

Meet Your Community

Get out your card table and make friends! Summer means concerts, festivals and parades—perfect places to set up a literature table and reach the masses with our message. PETA can supply fliers, factsheets, posters, videos, advice and moral support, but we need you to reach out in your community. So, please, win animals some new friends. It’s easy as pie. Find out where other groups in your community set up tables, and get a list of festivals or fairs from your local parks, tourism, or commerce department, then apply for your permit (a simple but sometimes necessary step). Call PETA for a free “tabling pack” filled with literature, sign–up sheets and posters and get tabling! When you “educate to liberate,” you can safely bet that you will reach some people, who will reach some more people, who will reach still others, and on it will go.

Host a Straw Giveaway

When cold weather hits, Shirley Phillips buys bales of straw in bulk from her local garden center, whose owners generously let her store the straw there. When Shirley spots a shivering outdoor dog, she drives right back with a bale of straw and even visits with the dog’s “people” to tell them how dangerous (and harsh) life outdoors is for animal companions. Visit HelpingAnimals.com for more tips on helping backyard dogs.

Sport a Message T-Shirt

Jen McClure found that attention–grabbing animal rights T–shirts make great conversation starters at the park, where they’ve helped her bring up issues such as vegetarianism and animal testing with fellow dog lovers.
