| "Dolphin-safe tuna" isn't good enough. We want "tuna-safe tuna." |
Whats going on?! On our Amazing Inventions pages youll find caviar - not that goop torn from a mother sturgeons tummy, but a vegan taste-alike called Cavi*Art. It sounds odd, doesnt it? Faux fish? Even odder to me is remembering that I used to fish! I would stand in the warm Gulf Stream waters in my shorts, enjoying the sunshine and the surf and thinking peaceful thoughts. Did I think that those fish, the ones I watched struggle on my hook, were fake? How else can I explain that I blithely impaled them, handed them to my father to gut, and then threw my line into the water again? Who said humans are thinking animals?
As Linda McCartney said in her anti-fishing spot for PETA, when you see the fish with their mouths open and gasping for air, remember - they are desperately fighting for their lives.
A short film featuring Ewan McGregor, the star of the latest Star Wars movie, makes that point in a unique way. In it, Ewan is walking along the beach, when he spots a chocolate éclair lying on the sand. He picks it up and takes a bite. Whoosh! Out from under the sand pops a line that is attached to the hook that has him impaled through the lips. As he struggles, Ewan is pulled into the sea, writhing and struggling.
Many people eat fish without catching them, but they are just paying someone else to do the dirty work. Most commercially sold fish are caught in enormous nets, which not only are cruel to fish, but also kill turtles, sea birds and dolphins.
Please join me in saying dolphin-safe tuna isnt good enough. We want tuna-safe tuna and sea lion-safe salmon, and the only way to have that is to say, Ill take the fake fish, please!
For the animals,

Rescued! - Oreo Is One Lucky Cookie
|
-Oreo and his pal Shaz
Oreo and his battered guardian turned up on PETAs doorstep when she fled an abusive relationship. Fearing for the bunnys safety if she left him behind, she asked PETA to take him in. The lucky bunny landed in clover when he was adopted by PETA staffers Arathi Jayaram and Luke Downing. Today, Oreo is king of the castle-literally. (He has a cardboard castle that he loves to hop in and out of.) He loves to play with feline housemates Zooey and Shaz and even shares his hay with them. In the evenings, he likes to sit on Arathis lap and watch TV.
