Pig Stabbing on Survivor II
In response to our complaints, the Australian attorney general for Queensland, the RSPCA, and the U.S. attorney in Los Angeles are investigating an episode of Survivor II in which a contestant stabbed a pig to death. The U.S. Depiction of Animal Cruelty Act forbids airing the killing of animals for entertainment purposes. The show was filmed in Australia, where the Animal Protection Act makes it illegal to torture, mistreat, or bait any animal or to instigate such acts.
PETA contacted the shows sponsors, including Target and Frito-Lay, to request that they withdraw their support.
Please write to CBS and ask them to stop killing animals for entertainment.

Bringing Animals Into the Fold
PETAs two new billboards urge people on both sides of the abortion debate to be merciful to animals by choosing not to eat them. Our newly designed T-shirt proclaiming, Blessed Are the Merciful. Go Vegetarian, promotes a message of love and compassion for all beings (to order a T-shirt, see our catalog in this issue). PETAs two audio cassettes, one on Judaism and vegetarianism and another on Christianity and vegetarianism, as well as a pamphlet on Christianity and vegetarianism, discuss religious beliefs regarding the eating of animals. Caseworker Success Stories
PETAs Research, Investigations & Rescue (RIR) Department makes tremendous strides for animals every day! In the past few months alone, RIR, with the help of caring individuals, saved dozens of animals lives. They:
saved five Great Danes from a neglectful person who is now forbidden to own animals
got a radio-sponsored live goldfish-eating contest canceled
helped secure passage of a bill allowing retired military working dogs to be adopted rather than spending the rest of their lives in kennels
convinced Hillcrest Health Center to stop using cats in cruel intubation training
provided La Cumbre Golf & Country Club in California with effective alternatives to killing thousands of coots on its property
pressured the Palm Beach Sheriffs Department to impose harsher punishments and terminate two deputies involved in dogfighting
convinced Oregon State University to stop purchasing dogs for experimentation from Class B dealer C.C. Baird, who is known to acquire dogs from filthy, substandard markets and is suspected of selling stolen companion animals.

Government Burns Rabbits With Chemicals
Years after the U.S. Department of Transportation approved CorrositexTM, an accurate, non-animal test for corrosive chemicals, PETA has learned that the department is still using outdated tests on rabbits. Acids and stain removers were rubbed onto the shaved, raw skin on rabbits backs, in some cases eating right through the sensitive skin and causing deep tissue damage and terrible pain. PETA has asked the new secretary of transportation to stop using rabbits and mandate CorrositexTM to test corrosive substances. Send polite letters to:

PETA is calling on Air France, the largest carrier of primates to research laboratories in the United States, to end its involvement in cruel, useless animal experiments. Air France can profit from the transport of humans without its involvement in the immoral primate trade.
Please write Air France and ask that it join the growing list of carriers (China Airlines, Korean Air, British Airways, Virgin Atlantic, United Airlines, TWA, KLM, Alitalia, etc.) that refuse to transport primates destined for experimentation. Write to:

Rosie Retracts!
PETA has settled a lawsuit with Rosie ODonnell over her on-air comment that the leather featured on her show was approved from PETA. Said Rosie in her public acknowledgment of the mistake: The fact is, PETA feels no one needs to wear leather apparel at all...no one needs to hurt and kill animals for fashion anymore. For more information about why PETA opposes all leather, you can check out their Web site at CowsAreCool.com ...

PETA Sues EPA-Twice!
PETA has launched two lawsuits against the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to force it to stop depending on useless animal tests and compel chemical companies to submit existing data on hazardous chemicals and to reform its developmental neurotoxicity test, which is intended to detect a chemicals effect on the nervous system. This test kills 2,000 animals per substance and has never been validated for its relevance to humans, which means that the results of this test are meaningless. Dr. Carol Helstosky, a pregnant PETA member, has joined the suit, accusing the EPA of putting her unborn child at risk by relying on data from flawed animal tests.
PETA is also asking new EPA Administrator Christine Todd Whitman to reexamine other large animal-testing programs, including the Endocrine Disruptor Screening Program (EDSP). The EPA is ignoring critical non-animal tests, and if not changed, the EDSP will kill tens of millions of animals.
Please visit PETA-online.org
for more information. Also ask Ms. Whitman to reconsider her predecessors massive animal-testing programs and to devote funds to non-animal tests.
