Say “Neigh” to Horse Cruelty
Wyeth-Ayerst, maker of Premarin, a prescription medication for menopausal women made from the urine of pregnant horses, is asking women to submit their “success” stories to Parade and Good Housekeeping as part of a promotion of Premarin’s May 2002 60th anniversary. Mares used for Premarin are confined to cramped stalls for months, constantly hooked up to sacks that collect their urine. Their foals are unwanted “byproducts,” and most are sold to slaughterhouses. Please write to these magazines explaining that 60 years of this cruelty is nothing to celebrate.

Give Animals in China a Sporting Chance
PETA asked the more than 100 members of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) not to award the 2008 Games to China unless the Chinese government promised to enact much-needed animal protection legislation. In their bid to win the 2008 Games, Beijing officials have “cleaned up” the city—by confiscating and killing people’s dogs. Some animals were beaten to death in front of their heartbroken guardians. Amazingly, the IOC ignored China’s cruel actions and awarded it the Olympic Games.

Please ask the IOC to be a force for positive change in China by requiring that the Chinese government, in exchange for being awarded the 2008 Games, create and enforce national animal protection laws. Write:

PETA Victorious!

With the help of caring PETA members, our caseworkers have accomplished dozens of miracles for animals. Recently, PETA:

victory flag• persuaded General Mills to stop sponsoring cruel animal circuses UniverSoul Circus and Circo Mundial.

• convinced Columbia University to remove a cruel “experiment” from its Biosphere 2 Web site that encouraged kids to slowly bake goldfish to death.

• succeeded in convincing Toys R Us to ban animal acts from its parking lots.

• sank a planned goldfish-eating contest at a Virginia bar.

• informed a New Jersey prosecutor of a major dog-fighting championship scheduled to take place in Toms River, resulting in a raid that included a large number of arrests and the seizure of badly injured dogs.

• secured a pledge from top apparel manufacturer Esprit de Corp to boycott leather from India until the Indian government takes steps to enforce basic animal protection laws.

• helped convince the Environmental Protection Agency to spend $4 million researching and developing non-animal-testing technology.

• convinced Florida realty company DBR Asset Management to declare its properties off limits to traveling animal acts.

• notified Suarez Bros. Circus sponsor Coca-Cola of the tropical circus’s abusive treatment of seven polar bears, resulting in the soft-drink giant’s cancellation of support.

• released details of shocking cruelty to pigs found during our undercover investigation of the third-largest pig factory farm in the U.S., Oklahoma’s Seaboard Farms, Inc. One manager was charged with four counts of felony animal cruelty—the strongest charges to date in U.S. history for factory-farm animal abuse.

• convinced Idaho’s Preston High School to vow to leave animals out of future events, after contacting its principal about a planned greased-pig contest.

• helped rescue 28 big cats from exotic animal exhibitor Gatekeepers Wildlife Sanctuary. The outfit was charged with 28 counts of animal cruelty for crowding big cats, several of whom were malnourished and infected with wounds from fighting, into tiny, filthy cages.

• successfully campaigned for the transfer of elephants from the London Zoo, where they were living in a small cement enclosure that offered no privacy, to Whipsnade, a zoo with a natural substrate, large enclosures and a submergible pool for the elephants to bathe in.

Stop! Before You Sign That Health Charity Check…
humane seal stickerHumane Seal buttonCan you spot the Humane Charity Seal of Approval on your donation request form? If not, your favorite charity may fund cruel animal experiments. To help you find out whether or not your preferred health charity is cruelty-free, PETA has teamed up with eight other organizations to create the “Humane Seal.” Spread the word about the seal by returning donation request forms with stickers that say, “Attn.: Executive Director. I only support charities with the Humane Seal. Visit HumaneSeal.org to apply.”

PETA Produces “Love Affair With Faux” Runway Show
PETA Produces “Love Affair With Faux” Runway Show
When PETA hits a fashion runway, it’s usually with a sign reading, “Fur Shame.” But this season, to highlight the innovative skin-free designs of Marc Bouwer, we sponsored an official Fashion Week event of our own in New York City, featuring faux fur, fake snake, mock croc, synthetic shearling and pleather.
PETA’s “fashion police” stormed the catwalk during Paris’ haute couture Fashion Week to urge pelt-pushing designers to “Stop the killing!” British and American activists made it onto the runway at the Valentino, Versace and Jean-Paul Gaultier shows, where they unfurled banners reading, “Fur Kills,” and chanted, “End fashion bloodshed!”

After the Versace show, former Culture Club singer and DJ Boy George gave the protesters the thumbs up. “I think it’s a legitimate expression of emotion,” he said, adding, “I’m a vegetarian.”
