Dear Animal Times Readers,
Last year, I was involved in a chilling incident. On a return
flight to Norfolk, the pilot attempted to land despite pitch-black
clouds, high winds, and heavy rains. Unknown to the passengers,
all other planes had been diverted, aware of a hurricane watch
and dangerous conditions.
I could see from the window that our descent into this black
hole was a mistake. Suddenly, we were caught in a wind shear.
The pilot struggled to regain control, and then, in his words
later, we were “tossed out” over the ocean. Perilously
low on fuel, the pilot next attempted an emergency landing
at an Air Force base in the area, the storm system still raging
below. This time, as we tried to land, we were tossed about
as if we were caught in a tumble dryer. With scant fuel left,
the pilot managed to get us to a third airport where we landed
amid the lights of emergency vehicles, ready for action in
case we crashed.
One passenger told me later that during the worst of it, he
had worried that his wife would not be able to keep his business
going, another said that she just thanked God she hadn’t
brought her children on the trip, and another said that the
experience had made her decide to change careers. I hadn’t
thought we would live either, but through it all I had been
very pleased to know that PETA is in good hands, that we have
a hardworking, dedicated staff that cares about animals and
what happens to them.
Of course, each of us needs to live as long as possible to
do as much as possible to bring about that revolution in consciousness
that must happen if animals are to be any more than food,
toys, clothing, or test tubes for human beings. It is up to
each of us to educate others, even by simply passing this
magazine along to someone else, cooking someone a vegan meal,
or putting a flier up on a bulletin board.
In celebration of your own life, won’t you please join
me in resolving to do something to help animals today and
every single day of the coming year?
For all animals,
Ingrid E. Newkirk
