Terrific news! Taiwan has passed its first-ever animal protection law! The move came after years of defeated legislation—AND after dozens of protests, letters, calls and faxes from concerned PETA members. (Please see our Actions & Updates section for more.)

In this issue, we bring you a heartbreaking story about a cow—a story many of you have told us is the single biggest reason you decided to go vegetarian. It’s back by popular demand—please share it with friends, family and coworkers. We guarantee it will get them thinking!

Don’t forget our friends outdoors. Here are some tips:

    • Provide food for birds by planting shrubs and flowers that produce seeds and berries (shrubs and trees provide protection from the elements, too!). Put a low birdbath in your yard to provide vital water for wildlife. Don’t forget to break the ice and replenish the water regularly.

    • Keep cats and dogs (and rabbits!) indoors, safe and warm. Cats often climb into warm car engines and are injured or killed when the car is started. Animals can become disoriented in snow and sleet and get lost. Despite their fur coats, animals also suffer from frostbite.

    • Watch out for your neighbors’ animals. Make sure chained or “outside” dogs have shelter and plenty of food, water and bedding (straw, not cloth). Urge people to bring animals inside. And call animal control or the police if you believe an animal is neglected. Your calls really DO save lives!

Thank you for all you do!
