Home > Action Alerts > Help Pass California Bill AB 1428 Banning the Sale of Cloned PetsOn February 22, California Assemblyman Lloyd E. Levine introduced a bill to ban the sale or transfer of cloned or genetically altered pets in California. Most people mourn the deaths of their dogs and cats as they would any other beloved family member. But some people are misguided into believing that a cloned version of Fluffy means that Fluffy will live on. This is a tragic mistake that has far-reaching consequences. Even those animals deemed successfully cloned live shortened lives prone to debilitating pain and illness. And for each “successful” clone, dozens more are born too sick or deformed to survive. Cloned animals cost tens of thousands of dollars to “create,” and they take homes away from animals who could be adopted from our nation’s overcrowded shelters. Any way you look at it, cloning pets means cruelty to animals. If AB 1428 is signed into law, it would be a huge blow to animal abusers such as Genetic Savings and Clone, a profiteering California business that sells cloned cats for $50,000 each. But with big profits on the line, AB 1428 is sure to face fierce opposition in the California Assembly—that’s why humane citizens need to make their voices heard.
