Ask Megan

Why do campaigns last so long sometimes?

Unfortunately, there are many industries that profit from abusing and exploiting animals and that are resistant to treating animals better, so it sometimes takes time to effect change. Plus, there is a lot involved in any campaign that we undertake. Demos are just the tip of the iceberg. Behind the scenes, PETA representatives work through the legal system to make headway for animals and painstakingly negotiate and renegotiate with companies and industries that we are campaigning against.

As with any other social movement, it sometimes takes a long time to see the change that you’re fighting for in the animal rights movement. But over the years, PETA’s significant victories have moved animal rights further than any other social movement has progressed. Many cosmetics giants have gone cruelty-free by replacing archaic animal tests with non-animal alternatives. Numerous federally funded laboratories have been closed because of PETA’s pressure and exposure of their fraud and abuse. General Motors has stopped using animals in crash tests, the inhumane fur industry is in real trouble because of declining sales, and the list goes on. By becoming an animal rights activist, you have the chance to not only speak out for animals but to also be a part of history in the making.
