Ask Megan

Are your protests peaceful? I have always wanted to attend one, but I don’t think that yelling at people is my style, and it isn’t anything that I want to do.

Our protests are always nonviolent. One of the central beliefs shared by most animal rights activists is the belief that we should not harm any animal—human or otherwise. The goal of all our demonstrations is to initiate conversation—not confrontation. We’re there to educate and talk to people about animal rights issues, so we speak out for animals by chanting, but as a general rule, we don’t yell at people or engage in arguments. We also understand that people have different personalities, and some might not feel comfortable being as vocal as others. Even if you’re shy or uncomfortable with public speaking, you can still participate in one of our demos. Let leaflets do the talking for you; take photographs of the protest; hold a sign, banner, or poster; or wear a costume, if appropriate. Whatever you feel comfortable doing—just do it! Remember, it only takes one individual to educate hundreds of people and affect their often unwittingly exploitative attitudes and lifestyles. You can be that person for animals!
