Ask Megan

What can I do to protest the March of Dimes’ use of animals in cruel laboratory tests?

March of Dimes experimenters have sewn shut the eyes of newborn kittens and killed the young animals after they had endured a year of blindness; administered alcohol, nicotine, and cocaine to pregnant and newborn animals; and performed other agonizing experiments on primates, ferrets, sheep, and other animals. The March of Dimes relies on donations from individuals who are unaware that their contributions are being used to torture animals instead of to help babies. Its single largest fundraiser is WalkAmerica, a series of walk-a-thons held in every major U.S. city throughout March, April, and May. Your presence at the WalkAmerica event in your area is vital to educating March of Dimes supporters about the charity’s choices when it comes to deciding which projects to fund. It is critical that caring activists encourage WalkAmerica participants to designate that their contributions be used only for non-animal projects, such as a birth-defect registry that could save countless babies’ lives. Please contact me to arrange a peaceful, educational leafleting event at your local WalkAmerica. If you know of a school, church, or other community organization involved in fundraising for March of Dimes, you can request to work with charities that do not support animal cruelty instead. Politely speak to administrators and tell them that there are ways to help people and animals at the same time.
