Elephant Attacks Handler at Ringling’s Breeding Compound
On April 13, an elephant handler was trampled and critically injured by an elephant at Ringling’s breeding center in Polk City, Fla. Injuries and deaths resulting from altercations between circus handlers and animals are not uncommon in the circus industry.
Elephant Tests Positive for TB at Ringling Breeding Compound
PETA first learned from an informed source that a male elephant at Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus' breeding facility in Polk City, Florida, has tested positive for Mycobacterium tuberculosis (TB)--a human strain of the deadly disease that can be spread from elephant to human, human to human, and human to elephant.
Elephant Tuberculosis Danger
An outbreak of a human strain of tuberculosis (TB), called Mycobacterium tuberculosis, is infecting and killing captive elephants in the United States. Since 1996, this highly contagious bacterial lung disease has been diagnosed in at least 18 elephants in circuses, including Ringling and Shrine circuses and several zoos. The number of elephants harboring TB is unknown. Six elephants have died and several elephant handlers have tested positive for the disease.
