Happy Thanksgiving! It's the time of year when family and friends come together to give thanks, share stories, and, of course, to eat! We hope that you can schedule some time in the coming weeks to help encourage others not to eat turkeys by passing out PETA's "Give Turkeys a Reason to Give Thanks" leaflets! Most people don't know that 300 million turkeys are killed in the U.S. each year. Forty million are killed for Thanksgiving alone. Genetic manipulation and antibiotics enable farmers to produce birds who can weigh 35 pounds in as little as five months. Workers cut off portions of the birds’ toes and upper beaks with hot blades, all without pain relief, in an attempt to keep the extremely crowded birds from scratching and pecking each other to death. At the slaughterhouse, birds are often still conscious when their throats are slit, and many are even burned alive in scalding-hot defeathering tanks. Fill out this form, and I will send you 100 leaflets. You can also download PETA's "Holidays Are Murder on Turkeys" poster to put on bulletin boards at your workplace, school, or library or around the neighborhood. If you can use more leaflets or have any special requests, please e-mail us. You can help make Thanksgiving a day of true thanks for humans and nonhumans alike by encouraging your friends and family to celebrate with a compassionate vegetarian feast. Not only will you spare the lives of countless turkeys, you'll also help your loved ones prolong their own lives! The following are some of our favorite delicious vegan holiday recipes, which are sure to please everyone's palate. No one will miss the cholesterol or the cruelty of animal-based dishes.
